  • Reflexology is the gentle application of pressure to specific reflex points in the feet to encourage homeostasis within all the body's systems.
  • It is based on the theory that the nerve endings in the feet correspond to all of the systems within the body and that gentle, intentional stimulation of those nerve endings allows the body to balance its own chemical/physical environment.
  • Reflexology may also help to release built-up lactic and uric acid in the feet, creating more fluid neurotransmission and a reduction of inflammation.
  • Reflexology is NOT used as a diagnostic method; however, it IS considered to be especially effective as an adjunct to other medical treatments or forms of bodywork. It may enhance the effects of those treatments.

History

There is historical evidence of some form of reflexology being practiced as far back as 2500 B.C. by Egyptian physicians. East Asian, Indian, and Native American paintings, carvings, historical records, and traditions also show evidence of the use of foot reflexology to promote healing. The Modern-day, Western styles of reflexology were originally developed largely by scientists and physicians who were experimenting with nerve-response and pain management.
